Named from heaven, confessed on earth

Son of God (huios tou theou) — υἱὸς τοῦ θεοῦ — Son of God. Hebrew already had the same cut: Ben-Elohim (ben elohim) — בֶּן־אֱלֹהִים. The first hearers already had ben language around kings and around Israel. They also had a psalm where Yahweh says to a king, “You are My Son.” They had not yet heard a voice from heaven use that sentence over a craftsman from Nazareth, and they had not heard the Sanhedrin treat the claim as blasphemy.
The psalm is public. The decree is spoken.
I will declare the decree of Adonai. He said to me: “You are My Son — today I have become Your Father.”
— Psalm 2:7 (TLV)
First hearers already knew other ben uses. Israel can be called son (Exodus 4:22; Hosea 11:1). Heavenly beings can be called sons of God (Job 1:6). Those uses are real. They are not this title. This page starts with the royal decree, not with Job’s council, and not with Israel-as-son pulled across Matthew 2:15 as if that were the same confession.
Luke will later say Son of the Most High. That is a Gospel name for this Yeshua (Jesus). It is not a claim that He is El Elyon. El Elyon is Adonai’s Name in the Tanak. That Name has its own Glossary door.
Heaven says it first, at the water.
And behold, a voice from the heavens said, “This is My Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased!”
— Matthew 3:17 (TLV)
Gabriel already used the Most High line before any crowd heard it.
He will be great and will be called Ben-Elyon. Adonai Elohim will give Him the throne of David, His father.
— Luke 1:32 (TLV)
The angel replied, “The Ruach ha-Kodesh will come upon you, and the power of Elyon will overshadow you. Therefore, the Holy One being born will be called Ben-Elohim.”
— Luke 1:35 (TLV)
The unclean spirits use the same cut. They are not a second title.
And crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What’s between You and me, Yeshua, Ben El Elyon? I’m begging You, don’t torment me!”
— Mark 5:7 (TLV)
Seeing Yeshua, he cried out and fell down before Yeshua, and with a loud voice said, “What’s between You and me, Yeshua, Ben El Elyon? I beg You, don’t torment me!”
— Luke 8:28 (TLV)
Peter confesses it as the church’s mouth.
