“Only flesh with its life—that is, its blood—you must not eat! … The one who sheds human blood, by a human will his blood be shed, for in God’s image He made humanity.” — Genesis 9:4, 6 (TLV)
Genesis 9:1–17 · Sanhedrin 56a (later list) · Acts 15:19–21, 28–29
Noahide is a later Jewish name for laws said to bind the sons of Noah — the nations, not Israel under Sinai. The Hebrew is sons of Noah (b’nei Noach) — בְּנֵי נֹחַ — every people after the flood. First hearers of Genesis 9 heard a covenant with Noah: life, blood, image, and a world that will not be wiped that way again. They did not hear a numbered seven printed on the page.
The later list is called the seven commandments of the sons of Noah (sheva mitzvot b’nei Noach) — שֶׁבַע מִצְוֹת בְּנֵי נֹחַ. That package is a received later map. Genesis 9 is older than the title.
On this site this page is nations and life after the flood. It is not Leviticus 23. The appointed times (mo’adim) are Israel’s meetings. It is also not Natural Law under a new heading. Those two rhyme on life, sex, theft, and justice. They do not merge.
After the flood, God blessed Noah and his sons: be fruitful, fill the land, eat living things as food. Two limits sit in the blessing.
Blood is life. Flesh with its life — its blood — is not food. Human blood will be required. Whoever sheds a man’s blood, by a man his blood will be shed, because humanity was made in God’s image. Then the covenant: never again will all flesh be cut off by those waters. The sign is the bow in the cloud.
That is Observation. Fruitfulness. Blood withheld. Life avenged. Image as the reason a man is not clay you may break. A world kept.
Genesis 9 does not print idolatry, the Name, sexual immorality, theft, or courts as a numbered set. Later readers gather those from other lines — and from a reading of Genesis 2:16 that the Talmud itself treats as a later midrashic source, not as a table Moses handed Noah.
