Iniquity is the English word many Bibles use for avon (avon) — עָוֹן — bent, twisted, guilt that lasts.
Sin can name a miss. Transgression can name a line crossed. Iniquity is the warp underneath: not only what a hand did once, but what a life has become. First hearers already heard that weight. The guilt can be borne, visited, forgiven. It is not a mood.
Isaiah says the Servant is crushed for our iniquities. The New Testament does not retire the word. It names who carries it.
On this site iniquity is that bend. Sin and Transgression have their own rows. The gift is still a gift. This is part of why a hearer needs one.
