The people the text was written to.

Scripture is not a mist. It was sent to someone. Torah and the Prophets to Israel. The Gospels to people who already lived inside Israel’s story. Paul’s letters to named assemblies. “First hearers” means those readers — their language, their hour, their questions.

I start with them so a later church does not get there first. Catholic, Protestant, Pentecostal — those frames arrive after the sentence was written. They are not the enemy. They are late. If I let a late frame run the line, I will hear the frame.

The first hearers were not blank. They had Scripture, synagogue, empire, and hope already in their bones. That is the point of view the writer was speaking into. I am not hunting a world with no lens. I am hunting that lens.

Some of the books also say they are for those who come after (Deuteronomy 29:14–15; Romans 15:4; 1 Corinthians 10:11). I do not use “first hearers” to lock later readers out. I use it so we do not baptize the text in a brand before we have heard it.

On this site, that is the starting rule. Not the last word. The first honest one.
